Description: 

The Assistant Teacher works directly with the Lead Teacher to provide a safe and nurturing environment that promotes the physical, social, emotional, cognitive, and language development of each child in the classroom by assisting the Lead Teacher in the development, implementation, and execution of lesson plans and structured activities.  He/She will assist the Lead in all aspects of classroom management as assigned.  In the event of the Lead Teacher’s absence, the Assistant Teacher may act as the Lead, directing all classroom activities and carrying out written lesson plans within state licensing and accreditation guidelines.  He/She will assist in the preparation and completion of all accreditation requirements as assigned.

Essential Functions:

  • Assist Lead Teacher in the development and execution of lesson plans on a daily basis by participating in group games, music, discussions, etc.

  • Assist children with self-care activities, sleep/wake routines, personal cleanliness, and picking up and putting away toys.

  •  Promote the nutrition and health of children by assisting the Lead Teacher with meal and snack service, presenting food in a positive way, modeling healthy eating habits, and pleasant dining experiences.

  •  Assist with the preparation and completion of accreditation requirements on a daily and as needed basis.

  •  Visually observe and supervise children’s activities while interacting in a positive, age appropriate way.

  •  Maintain awareness of children’s whereabouts at all times.

  •  Assist other classroom teaching staff to maintain an orderly and safe classroom environment.

  •  In the absence of the Lead Teacher, maintain classroom activities and management according to the written lesson plans, and be able to confer with parents regarding children.

  • Maintain confidentiality of all staff, family, and child records and information as required by law and/or Agency policy.

  • Must meet Licensing age requirements for assigned classroom.

  • Must have minimum of Child Development Associate Credential

  • Minimum 1 year experience working with children

  • Must complete a minimum of 30 clock hours of training in child related topics within the 1st year of employment.

  • Ability to function responsibly as a member of a team.
  • Must be dependable, flexible and creative.
  • Ability to relate well to children and adults.
  • Ability to apply State and Agency requirements for licensure and accreditation.
  • Ability to read simple documents such as emergency information, prescription labels, medical information, dietary information, etc.
  • Ability to clearly document basic information such as accident reports, time and administration of medication, diapering and feeding information, and developmental progress of children.
  • Ability to meet State, Accreditation, and  Agency requirements for training.
  • Ability to comply with all Agency policies as listed in the Employee Handbook.
  • Basic computer knowledge helpful.
  • Ability to access and utilize internet resources as needed.
  • Ability to lift up to 20lbs frequently.
  • Ability to lift up to 50 lbs occasionally.
  • Must be able to regularly stand/walk, use hands to finger, handle, grasp, or feel.
  • Must be able to frequently reach with hands and arms.
  • Must be able to frequently sit, stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl.

Ability to successfully complete a post offer, pre-employment drug screen, background check, physical, and TB test required for this position.
